SUMMARY:Meaningful Movies Returns!
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Park Church in Elmira and the People for a Health Environment\, the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed is proud to support the return of the FREE documentary film series: “Meaningful Movies”! \nThis month’s film is “The Story of Plastic”\, a 2019 documentary film directed by Deia Schlosberg (Run time 95 minutes). \n“The Story of Plastic is a searing exposé\, uncovering the ugly truth behind plastic pollution and the false solution of plastic recycling. Different from every other plastic documentary you’ve seen\, THE STORY OF PLASTIC presents a cohesive timeline of how we got to our current global plastic pollution crisis and how the oil and gas industry has successfully manipulated the narrative around it. From the extraction of fossil fuels and plastic disposal to the global resistance fighting back\, THE STORY OF PLASTIC is a life changing film depicting one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues.” – (Quoted from TheStoryofStuff). \n“The Story of Plastic shows us a hidden crisis of global scale in our oceans. It destroys the myth that plastic always gets recycled. It exposes the machinations of the fossil carbon industry that have made us all highly dependent on plastic. And it gives us hope that alternatives are possible.” – Christopher Bystroff\, Professor\, Biological Sciences\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, Chair of the Green Sanctuary Committee\, Albany Unitarian Universalist Society. \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, October 27th at 7:00PM at Park Church for this FREE event! No registration required\, but MASKS ARE REQUIRED to attend. Please arrive a bit before our 7:00PM showtime.

SUMMARY:Yoga in the Woods: Forest Bathing with Dr. Katherine Fultz
DESCRIPTION:This program will provide the opportunity to observe a familiar location with fresh eyes\, and improve your overall sense of wellness through mindfulness practice. We will gather in the parking lot behind the West Elmira Fire Department (1255 W. Water Street\, Elmira) and head to the trailhead behind Pirozzolo Park on Saturday\, September 25\, to do a walking meditation and yoga series in the woods from 9AM – 11AM\, while paying close attention to the sensory experience of being in a forest environment. Integrating the traditions of “Forest Bathing” and yoga to guide our walks will help participants to cultivate an appreciation for the natural space around them. \nClass will focus on a “forest invitation” and will be taught by certified Yoga Instructor and Environmental Anthropologist – Dr. Katherine Fultz; these invitations are themes to guide our walking meditations and observations. Participants will pause periodically as a group to do a series of yoga poses\, followed by the opportunity to sit in contemplative stillness and observe the space around them. Following our walk\, participants will have the opportunity to journal or sketch their experiences before sharing with the group. We will close with tea or lemonade\, snacks\, and casual conversation. \nDress appropriately for walking and yoga movement. DON’T FORGET TO PACK a sketch book or journal and pencil or pen\, a blanket or towel that can be placed on the ground\, and a bottle of water. \nThis class will have a Member and Non-member rate\, and you MUST pre-register using this link. Participants from our July class will receive half-off to attend!
