We have lots of programs for children this month, as the summer season comes to an end. Many of the programs are free and for programs with a fee, scholarships are available for those families who need them. If you have questions or comments about any of these programs, please contact our outreach coordinator, Karen, at outreachcoordinator@chemungriverfriends.org.
Park Rangers
The Park Rangers program was started by Horseheads Family Resource Center. This year, Chemung River Friends and Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum have partnered with HFRC to hold this program every Friday in August. If you’ve never attended, you’re in for a treat. Each child gets an explorer vest so they can collect a button at each location. The program introduces folks of all ages to local parks and trails, with an emphasis on our natural environment and our roles in it.
There is no registration required, and this program is free to attend.
- August 2: Pirozzolo Park
- August 9: Holding Point
- August 16: Catharine Valley Trail
- August 23: Kinsella Park
- August 30: Denison Park
Watercolor by the River
Watercolor by the River is a standalone art class taught by master watercolor artist, Bridget Bossart van Otterloo. Bridget brings all the supplies you will need to paint a beautiful river landscape, and you will be inspired by the beauty all around you under the pavilion at Bottcher’s Landing Boat Launch. The next class will be Saturday, August 3, at 1:00pm. The cost is just $5 for children and $10 for adults thanks to a very generous grant from The ARTS Council. Snacks and drinks are provided, but class size is limited. Register here.
River Safety Paddle
All ages are encouraged to attend our free river safety paddle, which will teach you how to fit a life jacket, how to use your paddle, how to enter and exit a kayak, and more. A pizza dinner is provided, so you can bring the whole family. Our last safety paddle of the season will be on Tuesday, August 6, at 5:30pm at the Grove Street Boat Launch in Elmira. We provide the kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. Please bring water, wear water shoes (no flip-flops or sandals), and dress for the weather. Registration is required, and class size is limited. Register here.
